Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containingorganic compound, which is a colorless, odorless transparentliquidat room temperature and is a hygroscopic flammable liquid.It hashigh polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, and is non-protonicand miscible with water. It can dissolve in ethanoland most organic substances. When heated in the presence of acid, it produces a small amount of compounds. It decomposes at high temperatures and undergoes violent reactions when encountering certain substances, burning with a pale blue flame in air. It can be used as an organic solvent, reaction medium, and intermediate in organic synthesis. It can also be used as an absorbent for synthetic fibers.
